When you send emails as a company or as a personal brand, it’s extremely important that your team is aware of mistakes and can fix them quickly, right?

You might have set up some sort of system to avoid sending out these types of errors in the first place, like piping all test emails into Slack so everyone on your team knows about any issues right away.

If you’re also using SMS messages for business, make sure to check your links in your messages before sending. They may be shortened and it’s not always obvious that they are correct – so always click and check!

One way to do this is by setting up a Google Voice number. Google Suite users can set one of these numbers as dedicated for this purpose, and you could have an email sent to the associated account every time someone sends a text message to your test phone number.

You can also use something like Zapier or other similar apps to move the emails around if you so need – i.e. to take the test message and put it into your CRM, Slack, a spreadsheet, or something else.

You should also test the links to make sure things look how they are supposed to. This will save even the best of us from mistakes that crop up from time to time.

If you haven’t yet, it’s very important that you set up your SMS process to make sure that any issues can be quickly corrected. Set one of the simple systems I outlined above and save headaches and embarrassment from an SMS gone wrong!

SMS can be used for even better engagement, revenue, and more results when you combine it with other methods.

For example, you could send an SMS message to promote a new product as well as sending emails about the same topic. One way you can do this is by using Klaviyo and sending both text messages and emails at different intervals depending on your audience’s preference of communication timing.

I always like to announce sales beginning with SMS text messages and then following up with emails, especially if they are more than a day long. This way people know about the sale from both angles without being overwhelmed or bombarded by just one form of communication.

If you are heavier on the SMS side, it makes sense to use more messages or rely less on email.

However, for traditional brands that typically depend heavily upon emails with some occasional usage of text-based communication like in this example, their strategy will be a different one and they may want to keep using email as much as possible while only utilizing texts when necessary to augment their most-used channel.

As an e-commerce store owner or operator, you’re probably already using a variety of automated marketing techniques to stay in touch with your customers. This includes email campaigns for abandoned carts and post purchase sequences as well as browse abandonment emails; these are all great places to start when it comes time to implement SMS into the mix.

With a system like Klaviyo, this can be really easy. You just need to have people consent to receive text and you’re good to go. The general way people do this at first is to just set up an SMS opt-in form, asking for their phone number and maybe offering a discount or something similar to get their consent.

You can also use a 2 step optin form where you get email information first, and then SMS approval after that.

Once you have opt-in consent for SMS messages, you can include them in your email flows.

There are many creative ways to use SMS as a way of getting in touch with your customers beyond the standard “order now” text. For example, you could send an announcement or promotion via SMS that is specifically tailored for VIPs and frequent shoppers.

There’s much more you can do with SMS and your email marketing but this time I’m just focusing on how to get started with it.

How should you get started? Add it to one or two of your flows (automations), see how it works for your store, and go from there – take action by getting started and then build it out.
